1) White privilege.
2) Heteronormativity.
3) Racism.
4) Hearing Latinos referred to as “spicy.” ~ Bite me.
5) Fox News. ~ Refer to #1 and #3.
6) Stupid people. ~ They are everywhere. They procreate. They choose their “own” truths. Refer to #3, #4 and #5.
7) When American women call women of other cultures second-class citizens, as if we’re exempt. ~ Women in this country do not have that much to celebrate, especially women of color. Refer to #1, #2, #3, #4 and #5.
8] Patriarchy. ~ It’s still over. Stop calling me. Refer to the “Dear Patriarchy” post.
9) Glamour, Cosmopolitan and all other magazines like them. ~ I don’t need to learn another way to lose my belly fat or thrill my man in bed. YOU suck it.
10) Republicans.
11) Democrats.
12) The state of Arizona and all of the Xenophobia running rampant in this country. ~ This nation was established on the principles of greed, injustice, land theft, genocide and immigration. In fact, this country still thrives on those principles; the labor of undocumented immigrants; and the working class. How dare you? Refer to #1, #3, #4, #5, #6, #10 and #11.
13) Hate crimes and hate speech. ~ Refer to #3, #5 and #6.
14) The State thinking it can decide what laws apply to my body. ~ MY body. Refer to #8.
15) Organized religion and those who vehemently refuse to question it. ~ Refer to #5, #7 and #8.
16) Music videos on MTV, VH1, CMT and BET. ~ Women are demoralized and objectified across musical genres and television networks. Refer to #3 and #8.
17) Apathy.
18) Americans who do not exercise their right to vote. ~ Refer to #17.
19) WE, Oxygen and the growing number of Wedding Networks. ~ Million dollar weddings don’t guarantee a happily ever after, neither will that Vera Wang dress.
20) The fact that the American public school system is poorly funded; teachers are overwhelmingly unsupported and underpaid. ~ Refer to anything ever written by Jonathan Kozol.
21) When parents/guardians leave childrearing solely to teachers. ~ It takes a community, people. Refer to #20.
22) The so-called “separation” of church and state.
23) Ignorance.
24) Claims that the “re-appropriation” of hateful words that target, demoralize, oppress, and condone violence against specific groups of people is okay. ~ It’s not. It never will be. You are just doing their dirty work for them. Willingly and for free. Refer to #13, #15 and #23.
25) Dirty politicians. See #10 and #11.
26) BP and the politicians who have helped them become the company they are today. ~ Refer to #25.
27) Those who claim that feminists hate men. ~ We don’t hate men. It’s that simple…we don’t.
28) Women who think feminism is a bad word. ~ That’s what they want you to think. We actually encourage you to think for yourself! Refer to #8.
29) Ethnocentrism. ~ My culture is not better than yours. In fact, we can sit down and debate over whose is more oppressive.
30) When people start sentences with, “God said…” ~ Don’t you ever wonder what your God would say to mine? [Wait for it…] Did you ever think that perhaps your God was not the only God? [Wait for it…] What if my God was your God’s God? [Yeah I said it.] Refer to #6 and #15.
31) Pedophilia and the sexualization of children. ~ We aren’t doing enough to protect them. Refer to #17, #18 and #25.
32) The blatant racism, sexism, and violence against women occurring within the 14 billion dollar porn industry. ~ The porn industry is completely out of control and no one is doing anything about it. Refer to #1, #2, #3, #4, #13, #17, #25 and #31.
33) Sexism and violence against women. ~ It has to stop. Refer to #1 thru #32.

  1. Couldn’t agree more! Except…I enjoy the WE channel for two reasons: David Tutera and the “Girlfriends” reruns. I agree that a great wedding does not ensure a great marriage, but he plans such lovely ones! Other than that, I’m with you 100% Angry Crunkista here!!!

  4. I can’t even BEGIN to tell you how excited I am to see what CFC is doing!!!!!!!! If typed words could stand and applaud your efforts and work, these typed words would be doing just that. 🙂

    I’m comfortable taking on racist-misogynist-heterosexist white men who show up and are annoying. 😉 (Send ’em over to my blog or I’ll come by and challenge the hell out of them here if that’s something you welcome happening–and if their jerk comments are even allowed to be read by visitors here.)

    I was in discussion last night with a friend about how much grief the identified parameters of this blog saves you from enduring by not taking engaging in conversation here with the misogynists, the homophobes, the white supremacists, etc. Thousands of hours saved.

  5. Hey! I am rather late here but thanks for a great post. I read it when you posted it and have tracked back a couple of times since to try and articulate some of my own thoughts in regard to what you said.

    I have a question, and if you (or anyone reading) know where I can start learning about this, it would be much appreciated!

    Re #24, reappropriation of hateful words. I have suspected that I agree with you for a long time, but I don’t have any evidence to back it up, and I feel confused. I’d really like to know more about this.

    I’m so glad you asked that, because I’m wanting to find more about this as well. For now, here’s a wonderful piece on this and related subjects, written by Kai Chang of the blog Zuky, which seems not to be up at the moment, but I found a copy of his excellent post here:

    The book which was helpful to me on this subject was Only Words, by Catharine A. MacKinnon. Three essays–each brilliant on the power and politics of racist and misogynistic language.

    I hope we can develop a series of articles–a book?–on this subject. Most radicals I know reject the whole “re-appropriation” of oppressive language, but only within their own areas of struggle. And most groups led by men and/or by whites don’t tend to take racist/misogynist/heterosexist/ableist/sizeist language seriously enough–whether the issue is using it outright or “re-appropriating” it.

    I’ve had a fellow white gay man tell me it was okay for him to tell me is f’ed up racist joke because he heard Whoopi Goldberg tell it, and, after all, he’s one of the oppressed. I reminded him that just because Whoopi tells a joke doesn’t give him license to, and he most certainly is NOT oppressed by race or gender! And I have never spoken to him again.

    I am militantly opposed to oppressors using terms that maintain the oppressive status quo. And the proponents of “re-appropriation” are, in my own experience, disproportionately white, class-privileged, male, and queer folks who have been in the academy, and absorbed a dangerous kind of postmodernist ethic whereby things cease to have meaning, so “it’s all good”.

    I say, “No, it isn’t.” Not by a long shot.

  9. I love a lot of things on this list, but not all. I think that the bigots that label themselves the religious right and masquarade their racism and homophobia behind religion are certainly worthy of our venom, but not organized religion as a whole. I’m a Christian and I certainly have challenges to reconciling my faith with other aspects of my leftist leanings, but that’s the challenge. A true Christian would find much more congruous thinking with the left
    than with the right, in my opinion. I just think that people outside of religion are too quick in painting is with the same brush.

    Couldn’t agree more. I was recently told by my pastor (now ex pastor) that I had to be careful of how I spoke to anointed leaders because God would do things like “mess with my family” to get my attention (so that I would stop). And he told me that he felt God wanted to warn me not to speak against the church. He felt like God was telling him that He (as in God) was going to kill me because I spoke against the church (His bride…the Body of Christ). Seriously.

    This all came about because I strongly questioned the fact that churches stand empty during the week and kids are being prostituted on the streets. I wanted to know why the churches (since they have space) didn’t provide living areas for these kids….so that they wouldn’t be raped on a daily basis. Seemed like a good question…..

    So, that is what happens, sometimes, when you question. Very odd. I reckon that God’s shoulders are big enough to pose such a question.
